I just called someone on their Verizon Wireless cellular telephone and they were speaking to someone else. How do I know? Verizon cell phones beep when you call them if the person is on the line. My initial reaction is to hang up because I don’t want to bother the person if they are on an important call.
My second reaction is that I’m angry at Verizon for putting me in the position of feeling awkward about making the call in the first place. There were at least four beeps before I was taken to voice mail; the person on the other end heard four beeps and let the call go to voicemail.
My third reaction is to be mad at the person I called who didn’t feel I was important enough to take my call. I suspect when he heard the beeps he looked at who was calling and made that determination. My best friend has Verizon and on occasion has deemed me not to be worthy and let me go to voicemail.
My fourth reaction is to write this blog post.
My fifth reaction is to wonder who at Verizon Wireless came up with that system. I’d call Verizon Wireless to ask, but I suspect I’d hear four beeps and be sent to voicemail.
Are you beep worthy?
1. It is a calling feature that is called call waiting.
2. That is calling party indication, letting you know that the person you are calling is already talking to someone else. You have an option to hang up and call again or just leave a message.
3. You have a good point on that about importance and priority.
4. Just my $.02 being in a democratic country.
5. This feature is inherent to all digital telephone systems but it is all up to the operator to activate it or not.
beeeeeep!
I feel the same way. I just called today and was told that they could remove it but it would come back within the next three days. I don’t understand why they would make the decision to do this and offer no choice for the customer that doesn’t want it. It’s one of the reasons that I am thinking about not renewing my contract. It makes me feel obligated to answer calls that I would not otherwise answer and aggravates me when I get that tone when I call someone. I think someone needs to rethink it. What purpose does it serve?
