When I was a student at UMASS Amherst, I had a professor that taught a class called Money and Banking; his name was Prof. Banks.  He was a great teacher.  The subject matter could be a little bit dry and complex at times and when Prof. Banks saw that glazed look in his student eyes, he would take a step back and break into Shakespeare.  He was a great performer that had a great sense of timing and delivery.  At the end of the semester, he received a standing ovation from his auditorium full of students.  I never forgot him or his class and I wish I could share that class with others, but I cannot.

One of the things I find so fascinating about the Internet today is that this generation and future generations could potentially have access to the world’s greatest teachers forever and ever.

If you were the world’s greatest sixth-grade math teacher, would you want to share that gift with the world?  Imagine the ramifications.  Imagine the gift you could share with children all around the world.  Imagine a day when students all around the world wake up and have access to the teachers that suit their style of learning.  Today, the world’s greatest sixth-grade math teacher could become available to our children via the Internet by utilizing an inexpensive video camera and a website such as YouTube.  It is not that difficult to do anymore; in fact, it is rather easy.

So my question is this: what are we waiting for?

I always tell people that learning Microsoft Word is very important because the things you learn here carryover to all the other software you use.

When I teach Microsoft Word I also teach a lot of fundamentals that help with everyday computer use.  I don’t jump up and down and say “hey these are fundamentals,” but the things you learn in my free Microsoft Word 2010 tutorials will make learning other software such as Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook 2010, so much easier.

When you start using Twitter it is suggested that you follow as many people as possible.  The more people you follow increases the chance that they will follow you back and then you will have more followers.  If that occurs, that increases the number of people that might read your tweets.  It’s a numbers game just like sales.

This is the problem; I can’t possibly read what people tweet because it is way too much information.  There’re certain things in life I just don’t get it and Twitter is one of them.  Although I think it’s interesting to be able to follow a celebrity or someone that really is interesting to you, for the average person Twitter is a waste of time in my opinion.

But more importantly, I felt I was being socially dishonest by following people when I had no intention of reading their Tweet’s.  It’s just rude when you don’t listen to people when they talk to you.  Fundamentally that is my major issue with Twitter; I felt I was being rude.

Well not anymore.

The book about reputation management is unique because it’s the first book I’ve read on my new Kindle.  My three sons and Santa brought my wife and I a new Kindle for Christmas, which confirms their reputation as good kids.

At bedtime I like to read fiction and I’m currently reading Nelson DeMille’s new book The Gate House, which is a follow up to his earlier book The Gold Coast.  I’ve been on a Nelson DeMille kick for the last few months and it is a very entertaining book.

The article then went on to describe why gas mileage can vary so widely.  Was the car being driven on a hot or cold day?  Was the heater or air conditioning on in the car?  And if so, was it on high or low?  Was the car being driven in stop and go traffic or doing highway driving?  What was the road surface like and how old was the driver?  Were the windows up or down?

The main point I took away from reading the article was that many factors affect gas mileage.  Let me tell you why I’m mentioning this story to you.

I recently saw a post in a LinkedIn group from and ACT! user that was having all kinds of issues with ACT.  The issues were getting so bad that both he and his boss were having negative thoughts about ACT.  They were blaming the software about some issues and it made me wonder if that was fair.  When you install ACT, or any software for that matter on a computer, it is expected to work as advertised.  When it doesn’t, we get frustrated and take our frustrations out on the software.

I want to be clear here: I’m not defending the software.  What I’m suggesting is that sometimes these issues are not clear-cut.  Every computer is different and every user uses different software on that computer.  Could it be a firewall issue, or antivirus software that is creating the problem?  Maybe the user downloaded his favorite game and that’s impacting the situation.

The main point I’d like you to think about after you’ve read this is that there is no such thing as an average ACT! user.  We are all different and that impacts the way the software works.  If nothing else, recognizing this fact will hopefully make the whole process a little less stressful and make your situation a little easier to deal with.  Hopefully.

Many ACT!
